State of the Mobile Web, November 2010

This month, the report reflects on a year of growth for Opera, but more importantly, growth for the mobile Internet. Passing milestone after milestone over the year, our users took the full Web experience to their hearts and browsed an incredible 340 billion pages in the first 11 months of 2010 (compared to 129 billion pages in the first 11 months of 2009).
With more than 80 million users in November, the yearly trends reflect a user base spanning teenagers with smartphones in Western Europe to users of basic feature phones in developing countries. We look beyond borders, and beyond issues of economic development, to present the most rounded picture of the mobile Web available today.
Who are the risers of the mobile Web throughout 2010? Who has seen their star dim? Our statistics show that while some popular websites such as Facebook are staples of the mobile Web, there are significant movements bubbling just below the top sites. Twitter and Zedge are just two of the sites that rose significantly on a global basis, while waptrick and Friendster became less popular as the year progressed.
We believe people with access to information lead more social, more informed and more empowered lives. Growth in mobile browsing means the Web is pushing beyond its traditional borders. If the first era of the Web was about expanding the capability and content of the Web, the second age is clearly about access. Every page view and every new user represents an opportunity to expand the reach of the Web. We believe that is something to celebrate — not only during the holidays, but every day — for we truly live in a remarkable age.
In our regional spotlight, the focus is on Latin America, where we saw tremendous growth over the last year. In Brazil and Ecuador, for example, the number of people using Opera Mini increased significantly, setting the pace in a region where mobile web use is evolving rapidly.
Happy browsing, and happy holidays!
Jon von Tetzchner,
Co-founder, Opera Software

Highlights

  • As shown in Part 1 of the report, Opera Mini saw significant increases in all three categories of growth in November 2010: unique users, pages viewed and data consumed. In all, 80.0 million people used Opera Mini in November, 44.6 billion pages were served, and 6.3 petabytes of operator data were compressed for Opera Mini users.
  • As seen in Part 2 of the report, Nigeria passed the United States in terms of total Opera Mini users in the month of November. The United Kingdom, Belarus, Philippines, Poland, Bangladesh and Germany all went up in the ranking of top 20 countries. Turkey was a new addition in November, as Malaysia fell off the list.
  • In Part 3 of this month’s report, we look at countries in Latin America. The top 11 countries using Opera Mini in that region are Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Honduras.
  • Some numbers: From November 2009 to November 2010, page views in the top 11 countries of Latin America increased by 543%, unique users increased by 298% and data transferred increased by 447%.
  • Growth rates in Latin America: Brazil and Ecuador lead the top 11 countries of the region in terms of page-view growth (1535.9 % and 860.4 %, respectively). Brazil and Colombia lead the top 11 countries of the region in growth of unique users (575.6 % and 333.7 %, respectively). Brazil and Dominican Republic lead the top 11 countries of the region in growth of data transferred (1181.5 % and 599.7 %, respectively). Costa Rica leads the top 11 countries of the region in page views per user, with each user browsing 694 pages on average each month.
  • In the top Latin American countries — except for Brazil — Google, Facebook, Live, and YouTube variously occupy positions 1 through 4 in the site rankings for each country. In Brazil, Orkut replaces Facebook, but Facebook is still in Brazil’s top 10 list of sites.
  • We looked at the top 10 handsets used in each of the top 11 Latin American countries. Out of the 110 total handsets listed, 66 of them were Nokia, 29 of them were Sony Ericsson, 2 of them were LG, 1 of them was Samsung, 5 of them were BlackBerry and 7 were Apple.
  • In Part 4 of this month’s report, we look at the top sites and handsets worldwide at the end of 2010 (through November) compared to the top handsets and sites observed at the end of 2009. We also compare Opera Mini growth rates (for the period between November 2009 and November 2010) in different regions around the world.
  • Twitter and Zedge are two sites that rose significantly on a global basis, whereas waptrick and Friendster became less popular as the year progressed.
  • Thirteen handsets made the top 30 list in November 2010 that were not present on the list in November 2009. Nine of them were Nokia handsets, one was a Sony Ericsson handset, one was an Apple handset and one was an LG handset.
  • Between November 2009 and November 2010, Latin America showed the fastest growth in terms of Opera Mini users (up 308%), pages viewed (up 545%), and data transferred (up 487%), followed by South Asia. Africa and the Middle East were also at the upper end of the spectrum in terms of unique user growth, pages viewed, and data transferred.
  • East Asia grew surprisingly quickly (up 335%) in terms of data transferred via Opera Mini even though that region’s unique user and page-view growth rates were significantly lower in comparison.

Get Unique Porting Code (UPC) : SMS “PORT Mobile-Number to 1900

In order to migrate your current mobile number to a new mobile service provider (mobile number portability), following a series of steps, you need to get the Unique Porting Code (UPC) from the current service provider.
The UPC code can be taken from your existing operator.
Simply send an SMS to 1900 with the content
PORT ten-digit-mobile-number
The Unique Porting Code allocated to a subscriber shall be valid for a period of fifteen days from the date of request or such time till the number is ported out, whichever is earlier, for all service areas except Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licensed areas where the validity for the Unique Porting Code allocated to a subscriber shall be valid for a period of thirty days from the date of request or till such time the number is ported out, which ever is earlier, irrespective of the number of requests the subscriber makes.

Mobile Number Portability in India – A Reality Now!

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in India, which has been delayed for more than two years now, has finally made its debut starting in the Haryana circle. Mobile Number Portability allows unhappy customers to switch to another mobile service provider within the same circle, while retaining their existing mobile telephone number. Mobile Number Portability service is expected to be launched in other circles also by the end of this year itself.
It is estimated that, 10 percent of the mobile subscriber base is expected to avail MNP service in the first year. MNP implementation is expected to improve the competition and the quality of service as well.
Mobile Number Portability will also play a significant role in the 3G space as not all the operators have spectrum. So, a subscriber of a mobile operator which does not have 3G services may look to move to an operator who has.
The maximum time period for porting would be seven working days except in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licenced service areas, wherein it would be 15 working days.
Interested? Find out the Steps to Switch Your Mobile Service Provider.

Steps to Change Mobile Service Provider (MNP FAQ)

Now that Mobile Number Portability is a reality in India, let us go through the steps to be followed for switching from one mobile service provider to another.
What do I need to do for switching to another service provider?
For porting to a new service provider, you need to send an SMS PORT <Your 10-Digit Mobile Number>to 1900 from the mobile number you wish to be ported. You will receive an SMS with the Unique Porting Code (UPC) from your current service provider.
Now visit the nearest customer service station of the new service provider, apply in the prescribed application form quoting the Unique Porting Code (UPC).
The Unique Porting Code is the reference while filling up the application form with the new service provider.
You need to follow the steps for signing up as a new customer of the selected service provider. As per TRAI regulations, porting has to be completed within seven working days.
A maximum porting charge of Rs 19, as fixed by TRAI, can be charged by the new service provider.
Post-paid subscribers have to make sure that their last bill has been paid.
For pre-paid subscribers, any balance amount left will not be carried forward when the number is transferred to the new service provider.
Once a subscriber ports his number to the new operator, then, he will have to wait for at least 90 days before he can change his operator again.

Motorola Olympus Leaked Leaked

Some leaked pictures of Motorolo Olympus - a dual-core Processor powered smartphone from Motorola - was reported in Gizmodo. Motorola Olympus is also known as Motorola Terminator. The picture is not of high quality, but you can still make out the design which resembles that of Google nexus s and that of iPhone is some ways. The device appears to bear 4 inch touchscreen and has 4 fixed hardware buttons common among most android smartphones. This handset is expected to feature tegra 2 chipset and is touted as 'iPhone Killer'. It's becoming a fashion to tout handsets as 'iPhone Killer' just on the basis of hardware specs. By the time, these handsets will hit the market iPhone would have been upgraded..so it's kind of meaningless battle to launch 'iPhone Killer'.

motorola_olympus_!Motorola_olympus_2

LG Recently announced a Dual-core in the form of LG Star, Samsung is working on a dual-core smartphone as well..All these handsets are expected to be featured in CES 2011. 2011 is definitely the year of dual-core phones :)

Wireless Charging - The death of the wires

Though the mobile phone hardware and software capabilities have improved tremendously, the evolution of mobile phone accessories has been little lagging. Take for example, the chargers. We are so bugged up with the charging mechanisms available today. Every handset has a different charger. Samsungs and nokias of the world have their own format of chargers each not compatible with other brand handsets. Samsung is still worse, it has atleast 10 different charger types! Recently, the USB-charging has brought some sanity and uniformity to the mobile phone charging landscape. But still the universal charger is a dream..! There's one solution which has a potential to become an universal charging solution...wireless charging!

wireless-power

wildcharge-wireless-charger

Wireless Charging will take away the need for any form of wires and cables. If your mobile phone is capable of receiving radio signals over the air to communicate why cant it receive electricity over the air to charge itself? Think about it. Your mobile phone is capable of receiving GPS signals, Wi-Fi Signals, Bluetooth Signals, RF signals...but not electricity. But is it possible to transfer and receive electricity over the air? The research is on and the solution is not far from us. Read on..!

When you think about it, Solar Energy is the most obvious way to receive energy wirelessly. But the solar technology is still not matured enough to enable faster charging and the photo-voltaic technology cannot be miniaturized to fit into the needs of mobile phone's compact form factor. Even today, you have couple of solar-charging mobile phones in the market. But they are quite bulky!

powermat_home_receivers

Let's explore the various efforts being driven to offer wireless charging solutions. First up is the Power Pad solution, which basically involves a pad with thin and conductive surface that is connected to an AC power source. When you place a compatible device which has been 'tweaked' on top of the power pads, the charging takes place through conduction (physical contact). In this case, your mobile phone should be 'modified' or 'retrofitted' to be compatible with the power pads. Wildcharger for example requires the mobile phone back cases to be customized. The phone’s battery-cover is replaced with one that already has the WildCharge technology built in. Once replaced, the connector at the end of the adapter’s "charging arm” is inserted into the phone’s power plug. Duracell offers a similar solution in the form of "MyGrid". Here too, you need to buy 'power clips' that will hook on to the back of your mobile phone. Powermat is the third solution and operates on the same principle and in addition offers 'aesthetically pleasing' solution. There are more such as Palm Pre's touchstone.

wildcharger

The above mentioned approach based on 'conduction' and 'retrofitting' might look like 'too much of hassle' to achieve the wireless charging. You cannot expect the power pads to be available at all the places where you go. If you forgot the power pad, you are in trouble again. So, though the above solution enables a form of 'wireless charging', it appears to be a 'namesake' solution.

intel-wireless-power-1

What next? Couple of years back, a group of researches from MIT came together to form a company called "Witricity" - a company that specializes in realizing true 'wireless electricity' based on magnectic induction and resonance coupling. Witricity basically involves two components. The power source and the capture device. The power source when connected to AC outlet converts AC current into oscillating magnetic field. The 'Capture device' which will sit next to the gadget will capture these magnetic fields and convert them into alternatic current. These 'Power source' and 'Capture devices' are magnetic resonance systems and are claimed to be efficient. The advantage in this approach is the electricity is literally transmitted over the air. True wireless electricity is made possible. And the solution works even if the gadgets are few meters away. By configuring the capture devices accordingly you can control the current and voltage. The magnetic fields are transparent to the obstacles in the building. So, should work even beyond the walls. But the technology is still being commercialized and is expected to be widely available by 2012.

Most recently, Fujitsu, a Japanese company has developed a wireless charging solution similar to Witricity. But Fujitsu claims that their solution is much more energy efficient and can be fitted in to compact devices such as mobile phones. In addition the charging time is much shorter.

fujitsu

fujitsu-2

Realizing the need for wireless electricity, a consortium has been formed under the name of "WIRELESS POWER CONSORTIUM". The motto for the consortium is pretty straight-forward and future-looking.

WIRELESS IS BEAUTIFUL. CONNECTORS AND CABLES ARE UGLY. CONNECTORS AND CABLES ARE UNNECESSARY. WIRELESS BATTERY CHARGING IS POPULAR. INCOMPATIBILITY IS BAD.INTEROPERABILITY IS GOOD.

The solutions are emerging and are getting fine-tuned. Not to forget about the various side-effects that might open up and it's not a sweet thought to live in a constant flux of electromagnetic waves and microwaves. There's still a long way to go before we see commercial solutions that are safe, standard and widely accepted as a norm across all electronic gadgets. So, the day when all our gadgets and electrical appliances are powered wirelessly is not far away!
